Junior/Young Riders

Kelly Burris And the Brentina Cup

USDF Region 6 A letter from Kelly Burris:

I have reached one of my major goals. I have qualified for the 2010 Brentina Cup in Gladstone New Jersey, August 13-15, 2010. This prestigious competition takes the top twelve young adults competing in the United States at the Grand Prix level. The Brentina Cup is a major step towards my Olympic dream. Qualifying for this competition; not only puts me in the caliber of our nation's elite riders, but also allows me to be a part of the United Stated Equestrian Team Developing Rider Program. Cascade and I are now eligible to apply for grants to train with some of the top riders in the world.

This has been a long journey. With a lot of perseverance and hard work I have always tried to do whatever it took to keep this goal in front of me.

The estimated cost to for the trip to take a horse to Gladstone is approximately $15,000.00. This is why I am turning to you. I am looking for contributions to insure that we compete and succeed. There is a Region 6 Brentina Cup fund set up as a 501 (3)(C) charitable fund so that all contributions; great or small, are tax deductible.

Another piece of great news is that an anonymous donor has agreed to match, dollar for dollar, any individual donation that I am able to raise up to $2,500.00. That means any gift you might consider to the region 6 Brentina Cup Fund (I am the only qualified rider in our region which means that all donations will go solely to me), will be matched and therefore "doubled."

I want to personally thank my family for their support and Margaret and Gene Lapin for the honor to ride Cascade, because without her this dream would not have become a reality.

I hope that you will help Cascade and I succeed! Thank you for your time and help along the way.

Kelly and Cascade

Junior and Young Rider Dressage Freestyle Medals Awarded at the Adequan® FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North

USEF News Release

Lexington, KY - July 31, 2010 - It was time to cut loose. With Team and Individual medal contests behind them, the top dressage riders at the 2010 Adequan® FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North turned up the volume to perform in their musical freestyles for the Platinum Performance/USDF Dressage Championships on Saturday evening in the Main Stadium of the Kentucky Horse Park.

Jaimie Holland led the victory gallop in the Young Rider division aboard the mare Fleurina, and added a third medal - her first Gold - to her take this week. Performing to a jaunty version of "Georgie Girl," and representing Canada-Ontario, Holland earned a 72.700 from the judges for the victory.

Jhesika Wells, who represented Region 5/6, rode the spectacular Intrepid and added a Silver medal to their double Golds this week. Wells claimed the Silver with a score of 70.550, only one-tenth of a point ahead of Bronze-medal winner, Megan Lane (70.350), who represented Canada-Ontario aboard the nine-year-old Dutch mare Carvella.  Earlier in the week, Lane won two Silver medals.

In the Junior division, it was Jamie Pestana, representing Region 7, and her six-year-old Hanoverian gelding, Winzalot, earning their second Gold prize of the competition, having captured the Individual medal earlier in the week.  Pestana scored an impressive 74.250.

Taking the Silver in the Junior ranks was Catherine Chamberlain and Verdicci, representing Region 5/6, and the Bronze went to Esmee Ingham and Norseman, who claimed yet another medal for Team Canada.

Throughout the evening, the top dressage horses in North America showcased their best extended trots, leg yields and flying changes all to the rhythm of brassy show tunes, pop favorites and even the theme from Harry Potter.

"Nina is really fluid and really easy to bend, so I could really show it here," said Holland of her prize ride. "And it was really a special thing to be under the lights and under the big grandstand. I was amazed at how well she responded to all of that."

Even though she is wrapping up an incredible week, Holland said she has no intention of resting on her laurels. "I think you can never take winning for granted. Even though I won today, I won't settle. There is more in her, and I haven't found it yet."

Both Wells and Lane were particularly impressed with their horse's presentation tonight. "Caravella was like a horse that I've never ridden before," said Lane. "And now that I have a taste of that horse there is no going back"
Junior Pestana, meanwhile, rode to a lively ABBA medley. "It was one of several choices I had, but more powerful music makes Winzalot very tense, so really, he picked the music for me."

Of her routine, Pestana noted, "Winny is so young, I tried to make it fairly simple. I tried to lean toward doing everything consistently and correctly rather than adding in difficulty points."

Capping off her week with a Gold medal, Pestana was more than thrilled. "I hope to do Young Riders next year, and having had this experience it will make us so ready for that,' she said. "It's such a great experience, no matter how you place."

The winners of the Individual Junior and Young Rider titles will receive an Albion saddle of choice, leather bridle, leather girth, wrapped stirrup leathers and a numnah. Albion is the "Official Saddle of the NAJYRC.

The 2010 Adequan® FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championship presented by Gotham North concludes tomorrow with stadium jumping finals, eventing finals and the closing ceremonies. For more information, visit www.youngriders.org.

Get Recognized as a USEF High School Equestrian Athlete; Earn Hours this Summer!

Release: July 09 2010
Author: USEF Communications Department

Lexington, KY - The 2010-2011 year is already underway for the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program and students are encouraged to sign up now to count their summer practice and competition hours towards their goal of lettering as a USEF High School Equestrian Athlete. The program is now in its second year, and is tracking more than 2,200 students who have earned, or are in the process of earning their letters and pins.

"This is becoming the new standard of achievement among young equestrian athletes," explains Lori Rawls, Executive Director at USEF. "We have athletes who are thrilled to earn their first letter, because their high schools don't recognize equestrian as a competitive sport. We also have athletes who have already earned letters through their school's equestrian program, but realize this is a symbol of achievement within the national equestrian community. Either way, this is a perfect fit."

The High School Equestrian Athlete program is open to equestrian athletes in all breeds and disciplines who are enrolled in grades 9-12. The program runs June 1 - May 31 of each year, and honors those who document their training and competition involvement, regardless of breed or discipline.

Annual program registration and USEF membership are required and USEF membership can be acquired for as little as $15 annually. In addition, retroactive applications are available to high school students who are interested in earning their letters for previous school years.
